John White Engineer of the Year Award recipient - Wayne R. Mantay (January 2010)
The John White Engineer of the Year award is a peer nominated award presented annually in recognition of contributions to the rotary wing engineering profession, significant technical accomplishments and community involvement, throughout the duration of an individual's career. This year's recipient, Wayne R. Mantay (pictured with AHS HRC Chapter President T Watson), was nominated for his distinguished 39 year career with the Army. Wayne's research has contributed to advancements in rotary wing aeromechanics, to include both fundamental and applied studies in aerodynamics and acoustics. He has worked in flight research, and studied rotor and hub dynamics at the NASA Transonic Dynamics Tunnel. Wayne was a pioneer in the use of computational optimization techniques applied to rotorcraft problems, and was a significant contributor to the rotor optimization team. He has been a tireless advocate for rotorcraft, fostering partnerships between NASA and the Army at Langley Research Center. Wayne has been a continual supporter of AHS, serving as the AHS Forum Technical Chair twice, and an appointed member of the Technical Council and the Lichten Award committee.
