May - The High School Annual Scholarship Award-

The Hampton Roads Chapter of the American Helicopter Society (AHS) awards an annual scholarship of $2,000 to a local high school senior.  The scholarship is open to students who intend to pursue a career in engineering or related technical fields including physical, applied, or computer sciences.

After receiving some interesting and competitive scholarship essays the $2,000.00 AHS-HRC scholarship and AHS membership was awarded to Katheryn O'Connell of Cox High School.

Mrs. Mia Copeland, President of the Hampton Road Chapter of the American Helicopter Society presented a $1,000.00 check to Mrs. Josie Berry, VP Business, USO of Hampton Roads. The funds were raised during the last AHS Propulsion Specialist Meeting golf tournament held in October of 2007.

 

March- Howard Hughes Award

This year’s honoree for the Howard Hughes Award, given in recognition of an outstanding improvement in fundamental helicopter technology brought to fruition in the previous year, is the Network Centric Operations (NCO) Technology Development Team, consisting of the US Army Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD), AMRDEC Aviation Systems Integration Facility (ASIF), The Boeing Company and Rockwell Collins. The NCO Team during 2007 collaborated to develop and demonstrate substantial improvements in battlefield situational awareness and combat effectiveness that can be achieved via incorporation of advanced mission architectures, high bandwidth communications systems and advanced display systems. 

 

March - Lichten Award

The Society’s Robert L. Lichten Award recipient is Yvonne T. Fuchs of NASA Langley Research Center for her paper ”Vertical Drop Testing and Analysis of the WASP Helicopter Skid Gear.” This paper will be presented during Forum 64, Thursday, May 1, 2008, in Test & Evaluation II from 8:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. The Lichten Award is given to an AHS member who has not previously presented the results of their work at any national or international meeting.

 

March- Two awards at the Tidewater Regional Science Fair, $100 awards were given to :

Career Day at NASA Langley- The American Helicopter Society Hampton Roads Chapter hosted a booth at the NASA Career Day event, held February 20-21, 2008. Dr. Henry Jones, Dr. Karen Jackson and David Meyer represented the local chapter. The day was spent speaking to many high school students about their careers and exciting news within their industries.


The NASA Langley Career Day event for National Engineer's Week was held in The Reid Conference Center. Career Day is sponsored by the Peninsula Engineers Council (PEC) in conjunction with NASA to provide an opportunity for students to explore technical careers as engineers, scientists, and mathematicians. It is also designed to reinforce and broaden a student's career objectives.
